#WCW: Lily Becker
Woman Crush Wednesday.
We love to celebrate female movers and shakers who are successful locally, nationally, internationally, and most importantly, personally.
This week, we are so excited to highlight Lily Becker, an attorney and law firm partner in San Francisco. We asked her to share with us her thoughts on success.
Whatever your chosen career, seek out people who you admire. Ask them what they love about their jobs, what they learned along the way, and how they got there. I am constantly looking for inspiration.
Appreciate your support system. In my case, it is my husband first and foremost, and nanny and babysitters second, but for others it could be a roommate, a sister, a father, a friend. Whoever helps you in the daily realities of life, thank them for it. I simply could not do my job without them, and would not maintain sanity without them.
Reconnect with your squad, whenever you can. It's easy to get lost in the work of work. The demands can be overwhelming - travel, long hours, and just plain exhaustion. It's easy for me to go to bed instead of heading to a birthday dinner with the girls. But reconnecting with other women brings me strength I can't find anywhere else. Friends from high school, college, yoga class, mom's groups, swim lessons - I'll take it.
Make lists. Lots of them. To do lists at the beginning of the day when you get to your desk, and at the end of the day so you can clear your head. Packing lists, grocery lists, lists of notes to write, and lists of things that make you feel good. (If you are in doubt, just read The Checklist Manifesto).
Find Calm, Find Nature. I recently realized that I have to exercise every day. Exercise doesn't mean running five miles. it might mean getting off the bus 2 stops early and walking, or going outside for lunch. In desperate times, it might mean doing some squats when folding laundry. It's not a perfect situation when juggling kids, a demanding job, a marriage and more. When it's nice out, Sundays are family hiking day in my house. Taking my twin daughters to different easy walking trails and exploring the outdoors brings us all closer together while we're having a little fun. My new goal is to find ways to add more yoga to my routine (seeking inspiration and guidance from Beauty Redefined, MD co-founder Dr. Melynda Barnes).
And we asked her:
If you could tell your younger self one thing to jumpstart her career, what would it be?
Don't study or work so hard that you miss opportunities to make new connections or reconnect with friends.
